Breaking Dawn The Solar-Powered Future of Transportation
The future of transportation is on the horizon, powered by the sun. Synhelion’s innovative technology is set to revolutionize fuel production and usage.
By harnessing solar energy, Synhelion aims to create sustainable, synthetic fuels usable across diverse transportation sectors. This advancement signals a significant shift in how we power our vehicles, promising a greener future.
Synthetic Fuels Reimagined
Synhelion is pioneering the development of sustainable liquid fuels that can directly replace fossil fuels. Originally developed at ETH Zurich, their technology transforms solar energy into synthetic fuels using thermochemical processes. These fuels are suitable for sectors that heavily rely on fossil fuels, such as aviation, shipping, and road transportation.
As explained by Dr. Philipp Furler, co-CEO and co-founder of Synhelion, this cutting-edge process involves focusing sunlight onto a central tower using mirrors. The concentrated energy is absorbed and converted into high-temperature heat, which is then used to drive chemical reactions that turn carbon sources like biomethane or CO2 into ‘syngas’, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. This syngas can be further processed into synthetic crude oil, which can then be refined into kerosene, diesel, and gasoline.
The DAWN Plant
At the heart of Synhelion’s mission is the DAWN plant located in Jülich, Germany. It is the world’s first industrial-scale facility dedicated to producing solar fuels. Dr. Furler emphasized that the DAWN plant is fully compatible with the current global infrastructure, enabling it to co-process with other crude oil streams without major changes.
With an expected production capacity of several thousand liters of fuel annually, DAWN marks the beginning of a significant journey toward mass production. Although modest compared to global fuel demand, it sets a precedent for future scalability. Synhelion is already planning for future plants, including the RISE facility in Spain, which will be ten times larger than DAWN.

Scaling Up is Always a Challenge
Building an industrial-scale solar fuel plant presents numerous challenges, and Synhelion has faced its share while bringing DAWN online.
Dr. Furler highlighted the importance of scaling the technology efficiently and cost-effectively. To achieve this, Synhelion has partnered with experts from various industries, including oil, gas, and steel, who offer critical experience in constructing and operating large-scale plants. Additionally, ensuring continuous production regardless of sunlight availability is vital. The DAWN plant utilizes an innovative thermal energy storage system, storing excess solar heat in ceramic materials. This approach ensures that the plant can operate 24 hours a day, keeping production costs low.
The Dawn of Solar Fuels
Solar fuels hold significant promise for the aviation industry, which has long sought alternatives to fossil-derived kerosene. Dr. Furler pointed out that long-haul flights are responsible for about 70% of aviation’s carbon emissions. While electric solutions like batteries and hydrogen have their benefits, they lack the energy density required for long-haul flights, making solar kerosene a practical alternative.
Synhelion’s technology can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 85% compared to traditional jet fuels, with aims to push this closer to 100%. By partnering with major players in the aviation industry, such as Lufthansa, Synhelion is building a robust supply chain for solar fuels, paving the way for a more sustainable future in aviation.
Shaping Up to Change Everything
With DAWN as an important milestone, Synhelion is already planning larger projects to expand their impact. The next major facility, RISE, is expected to produce 1,000 tons of fuel per year and become operational by 2027. This is just the beginning of a larger strategy for widespread adoption.
By 2030, Synhelion aims to have the Shine plant operational, producing 100,000 tons of fuel annually. Looking further ahead, they plan to establish several plants by 2033, each with capacities of several hundred thousand tons per year. These plants will produce fuel at costs competitive with fossil fuels, facilitating broader adoption and global impact.
Looking to the Future
Solar fuels offer a promising solution for sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as aviation, shipping, and long-distance road transport. While electrification can drastically reduce emissions, solar fuels provide a critical complementary technology.
Dr. Furler advocates for a flexible approach to achieving global emissions targets, emphasizing that no single technology will meet all needs. Synhelion’s solar fuel technology could power the future of transportation. As their plants scale, the vision of a fossil-free future for various transportation sectors is becoming increasingly tangible.
The Broad Impact of Solar Fuels
Dr. Furler concluded, ‘Our mission is to create global impact.’ Synhelion’s solar fuel technology may indeed revolutionize the sustainable energy landscape.
As Synhelion scales its innovative solar fuel technology, the potential for a sustainable future in transportation becomes more attainable.
This groundbreaking work in harnessing solar power for fuel production represents a pivotal shift toward greener transportation options, promising a significant reduction in global carbon emissions.
